Black Mesa Trail |
| |
|
| |
This trail is advertized as an 8.8 mile loop hike that is accessed first from the First Water Road trailhead. From the trailhead, go down the hill and stay left at the fork with the Dutchman's Trail (104). Continue on the trail through some attractive territory, up a canyon and to a "trail fork" that we call the "Mound" (other trails from this "fork" include staying on the main trail that takes you through Garden Valley to the Second Water Trail (that eventually connects with the Boulder Canyon Trail), or take a left that also goes through a part of Garden Valley and connects to trails to or near the Hackberry Springs "trails").
The trail to the right just before the "Mound" is called Black Mesa. Take it all the way (about half-way through the entire loop) to a low, creek area where, if you "lean" right, you will find a sign for the Dutchman's Trail 104. Take it all the way back to the First Water trailhead. A very scenic loop trail that also gives you some pretty close-up views of Weavers Needle near the half-way point. |

I didn't realize until this view, that Weavers Needle is actually comprized of two spires, and in this light, that the closest (westmost) spire is largely hollow. . . |

Hieroglyphics Trail |
| |
|
| |
This trail rises 1.45 miles through a bajada into the mouth of Hieroglyphics Canyon, where several panels of well-preserved petroglyphs are located above seasonal pools. The basalt rock etchings were mistaken by early European settlers for Egyptian hieroglyphs, hence the erroneous name. |
